Asphalt shingles
This is where most of our repair work happens. Three-tab or architectural shingles—the style you see on most homes in Canton, Toledo, and Ann Arbor.
Storm damage → Wind lifts the edges, hail pounds impact marks into the surface, heavy branches punch straight through. We replace the damaged sections and check the surrounding areas for hidden problems.
Aging issues → Shingles curl as they get older. The protective granules wash off during rainstorms, leaving bare spots where UV rays break down the asphalt underneath. We'll assess whether targeted repairs make sense or if you're getting close to needing full replacement.
Missing pieces → Wind catches a lifted edge and tears the whole shingle right off. One missing piece creates a direct leak point. We replace it and check the adjacent shingles to make sure more aren't about to follow.
Flashing and penetrations
Flashing is the metal or rubberized material that creates watertight seals where your roof meets chimneys, vents, skylights, or walls. These spots are constantly moving as materials expand and contract with the temperature.
Chimney flashing — This is actually two separate metal pieces working together. Step flashing runs up the side of your chimney like a set of stairs—one piece tucked under each row of shingles. Counter flashing sits on top of those pieces and gets tucked into the mortar joints between the bricks. When the caulk dries out or the metal starts corroding, water sneaks between the two layers.
Skylight leaks — Usually caused by dried-out seals or sloppy original installation. We rebuild the flashing around the skylight's raised frame—that's called the curb—so water runs around the edges instead of pooling against them.
Vent boots — These are the rubber sleeves that wrap around your plumbing pipes where they stick through the roof. Sun exposure cracks them over time. A quick replacement stops leaks before they rot the deck underneath.
Valley flashing — Valleys are where two roof sections come together at an angle, and they handle a lot of water flow. Debris piles up in there, or the flashing wasn't installed right to begin with. We see problems pop up regularly after wet seasons in Ohio.
